The 4 Things Every Couple Screw Up With Their Wedding Flowers

wedding-flowers-australia

Flowers aren’t usually something you devote a lot of brain space to until you decide to get married. Floral centre pieces, archways, bouquets and boutonnières are often brand new concepts to wedding-newbs and this means that couples diving into the world of orchids and peonies will often have to put their whole faith in a florist that they’ve probably just met.

While we have a long list of extremely trustworthy florists right here on One Fine Day that you can do this with, we thought it would be helpful to let you know the four things that almost every couple screw up with their wedding flowers so you can be sure to avoid the same errors.

1. Forgetting about seasons

One of the major muck ups that couples make when planning their wedding flowers is selecting their ‘dream bouquet’ made up of a range of florals that are only available in totally different seasons.

If you want Ranunculus and Peonies with a Rosella branch detail on your big day, then frankly you’re dreaming! With none of those in bloom during the same season, you won’t be able to achieve this bouquet. To avoid disappointment we recommend cross checking with a ‘flower availability chart’ and consulting your florist to find alternatives that fit with your wedding date.

2. Fresh isn’t always best

Want to avoid dealing with the above issue? A marvellous way to get around seasonal restrictions is to opt for dried flowers. These make for beautiful rustic bouquets and they cope extremely well in the Australian heat. In addition to this, they can also provide peace of mind as you will know exactly what your bouquet  will look like as they can be prepared and transported well before your wedding day.

3. You have to be transparent with your florist

Come armed to your consultation with your florist with key statistics. These include your guest list in full, as well as specific key players in the ceremony – AKA anyone who needs flowers as part of their role.

Make sure you sit down with your significant other and nut out the numbers of the following…

  • Number of bridesmaids:
  • Number of groomsmen:
  • Number of flower girls:
  • Number of Paige boys:

You will also need to decide if you would like boutonnières, bouquets or floral pins for the following…

  • Mother of the bride
  • Mother of the groom
  • Church readers

…because let’s be honest, those bridesmaids bouquets aren’t going to make themselves!

4. You can often reuse ceremony flowers at your reception

This is a handy knack that most couples aren’t even aware of, but we really recommend discussing the reuse of flowers from your ceremony to your reception. Obviously for some items this is a given – as your groomsmen will probably keep their pocket square flowers for the remainder of the reception, however, the flowers you used to decorate the church or build around an archway that you said ‘I Do’ under can be repurposed. This may save you a lot of money on more flowers, but remember to factor in a little bit more of the florist’s time to make the change once the ceremony is complete.

If you want to be really savvy with your florals, you could even repurpose the bridesmaids and bride’s bouquet as centre pieces!
